Rodgers lied about his vaccination status and then tested positive for Covid-19. What happens now?

The Aaron Rodgers Fallout

Aaron Rodgers’ positive Covid-19 test revealed a slew of secrets about the reigning MVP.

Rodgers misled reporters back in September when asked if he’d received the vaccine. He said “yeah” and that he’d been “immunized,” which is not the same thing as getting the shot.

He lied after the NFL refused to recognize his homeopathic treatment as a vaccine equivalent and ignored the league’s covid protocol for unvaccinated players by showing up to press conferences unmasked. So now what?

We know for sure that:

  • Rodgers won’t play in Sunday’s marquee matchup against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs
  • He’ll be replaced by 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love, who’s thrown a career seven passes
  • Blake Bortles is now a Packer and will be Love’s backup
  • Rodgers can’t play for at least 10 days and will need to test negative twice in 24 hours to return
  • The soonest Rodgers can return is one day before his team’s game against the Seahawks. There’s potential he’ll miss that game, too
  • It’s possible that the NFL takes further action against Rodgers and the Packers that could result in the QB being suspended as many as four games

Rodgers’ positive test result has moved the betting lines, too. In the days since:

  • The line for Packers-Chiefs on Sunday moved from Green Bay -1 to Kansas City -7.5
    • That’s a massive 8.5-point difference and shows just how much Rodgers’ arm is worth on the field
  • The over/under for Packers-Chiefs dropped from 55.5 to 48.5

The Takeaway

The fallout from Rodgers’ lies won’t unfold overnight, but it’s clear his absence is expected to be a gamechanger on Sunday. The sportsbook thinks little of what the team can do with Love replacing him against the Chiefs.
