WNBA free agency is officially underway with players able to start talking to teams as soon as midnight on Saturday. ICYMI: That memo didn’t reach the Seattle Storm’s office, though, as they got hit with a tampering fine for announcing Sue Bird’s return three weeks too soon. Oops!
Anyway, let’s catch up on everything else.
Angel McCoughtry was spotted in Minnesota
Well, she wasn’t really hiding. McCoughtry sat with Lynx star Napheesa Collier at the Timberwolves game on Sunday. She posted pictures at the arena and the Lynx social media team hilariously cropped her out of a picture of Collier (no tampering here lol)
Stefanie Dolson went on a trip to New York with Betnijah Laney
Free agency and social media pair so well together. Check out this post of Dolson at a Brooklyn hotel, plus a picture with Laney and actor Anthony Ramos.
Three core designations were placed. Here’s what that means
The core designation is a tool general managers can use to have exclusive negotiating rights with one of their free agents. Each year, a franchise can only put this designation on one athlete, and each player can only be designated twice in her career.
This does not mean that the player must sign with the team that designates them. They could still force their way out of town. All this means is their route elsewhere would be through sign-and-trade.
The three core designations were placed by the Sun on Jonquel Jones, the Storm on Jewell Loyd and the Sky on Kahleah Copper.
