We’re just past the halfway point of the season, and now with All-Star closed it’s time to get serious as we march towards September’s finals.
While many were ready to crown the Aces champions after an astounding month of May, their competitors have come back to knock them down a peg.
Let’s review how each team can win. (Note: teams are power ranked 1-12.)
1. Sky, 16-6
Keep Candace Parker healthy. Nothing else. No notes.
2. Storm, 15-8
Get Jewell Loyd going. She’s had standout games, but the All-Star is shooting the second-worst percentage from the field of her career.
3. Aces, 15-7
Figure out what to do with that bench. The starting five are debatably the league’s best. After that, things get dicey. The trade deadline is on Friday, but a rotation shift might be more feasible.
4. Sun, 14-8
It’s tough because the roster once again has to be judged with a player (this time Jasmine Thomas) sidelined for the season though I still believe it’s strong enough to win as is. But if those Skylar Diggins-Smith trade rumors are for real, Connecticut may be the best title-hunting team with reason to pick up the phone.
5. Mystics, 14-10
Wrap Elena Delle Donne in bubble wrap and let Shakira Austin continue to get her reps up in games. D.C. needs her playoff-ready.
6. Liberty, 9-13
Keep firing up 3-point shots. If Sabrina Ionescu and Han Xu keep doing this, something special could happen.
7. Sparks, 10-12
We’re more than halfway through the season and I still haven’t seen enough of Chennedy Carter.
8. Lynx, 8-15
Keep cruising and hope Napheesa Collier comes back this season.
9. Wings, 10-12
We’re waiting patiently on the Satou Sabally leap, but the Allisha Gray one is here. Get her the ball.
10. Atlanta Dream, 10-12
Continue to let the chemistry build between the young scorers Rhyne Howard, Aari McDonald and AD Durr and vet Tiffany Hayes. It’s a slow build.
11. Phoenix Mercury, 10-14
I mean definitely don’t trade Skylar Diggins-Smith.
12. Indiana Fever, 5-19
