The Aces and Sky, the top two seeds in the WNBA playoffs, both suffered narrow defeats at home to open their semifinal series. Vegas lost by one possession to Jewell Loyd, Breanna Stewart and Sue Bird’s Storm, while Chicago lost by just five points to the Sun.
Should fans of either team be worried?
Sky fans should feel ok because…
That was about as bad as Courtney Vandersloot, Allie Quigley and the bench could’ve played, and they still stayed competitive. Those two plus Azurá Stevens, Rebekah Gardner and Julie Allemand combined for 8-of-31 shooting and just two 3-point makes. Vandersloot had just two assists and two turnovers.
Sky fans should feel a little worried because…
They lost THE Candace Parker game. That’s not to imply that Parker can’t or won’t have another breakout night, but scoring 19 points with 18 rebounds, five assists, six blocks and four steals and losing stings. The 36-year-old CP3 had everything going, but it still wasn’t enough — at home! Maybe it was an off night for her teammates, but maybe the Sun’s defense is that tough to crack.
Aces fans should feel ok because….
A’ja Wilson scored just eight points and the team came within one possession of winning. Not to mention Kelsey Plum, one of the most efficient scorers the game has, shot 8-of-23 from the field and 2-of-10 from range. Those numbers won’t happen again, right? RIGHT?!?
Aces fans should feel a little worried because…
Gabby Williams is likely coming back in this series and Dearica Hamby’s return isn’t guaranteed. That means an already deep Seattle team is going to gain another weapon who excels on the defensive end — yikes.
