The 2022 WNBA season is all of three days old with dozens of players still overseas or recovering from injury. What we’ve seen so far is obviously not guaranteed to continue but what fun is nuance in the world of early-season Takes. Follow along as I run down five quick thoughts that must be true if we’re taking the first 72 hours of play as fact.

The Aces have the best offense in the league

One of the biggest question marks I had all season was what Becky Hammon was going to do with the Aces offense. So far, she’s kept the team’s unreal pace, but added shooters while playing A’ja Wilson at center. In the first two games last year, Las Vegas took 27 threes. This year, they’ve fired 39 with wins over the Mercury and Storm to show.

Rhyne Howard will shatter 3-point records

I love rooting for a rookie filled with confidence, and damn, Howard has got a ton of it! As the No. 1 pick, she should, though, and the Dream need her to be their go-to for today and beyond. In her debut, she tallied 16 points and made four out of 12 (!) 3-point looks. To put that into perspective, Diana Taurasi led the league with 7.6 tries per game last year, and the Aces only took 13.5 as a team.

Sabrina Ionescu is this year’s most improved player

Ionescu may finally be fully healthy since the ankle injury she suffered three games into her rookie season. In a 2-point win over last year’s regular season-standings leading Sun, the third-year PG scored 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting (three 3s) with six assists and four rebounds.

The Fever are building something big

Yes, I know, Indiana is 0-2. But they’re supposed to be bad this year (and tank for another high pick.) And for the first time in a while, they’re showing a lot of promise while losing! In two games, No. 2 pick NaLyssa Smith has scored 26 points with 22 rebounds, No. 6 pick Emily Engstler’s done a little bit of everything with 13 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks, and No. 20 pick Destanni Henderson scored 19 points with three 3s in her second game.

The new-look Sparks are working

Yes, the Sparks’ second win came against said Fever, but beating a (short-handed, but whatever) Sky team in their first matchup of the season with a wildly new roster was still impressive. Liz Cambage is averaging 17 points per game, Nneka Ogwumike is scoring 16 with 7.5 boards, and Jordin Canada broke out in her debut for 21.
