The 2022 NFL season has led to some ridiculous outcomes. The Rams, Packers and Bucs are playing in a dumpster. The playoff favorite Colts are now employing an ESPN talking head as head coach. The Jets, Giants and Seahawks are playoff bound! Quite an upside-down year.

The win-loss results aren't the only surprising outcome. The results against the point spread are just as eye-opening.

Before continuing, if you need a brush up on what the point spread is, head on over to the Betting Academy to learn all the tools to become a better bettor.

The Rise of the Underdog

Usually, if the sportsbooks are on top of their stuff, there are an even number of wins and losses for the favorites and the underdogs when it comes to point spread results. This 50/50 split is NOT happening thus far this season.

In 2021 - Underdogs were 137-133-2 ATS - 50.4%

In 2022 - Underdogs are 75-56-5 ATS - 57.3%

Now that's a slight difference but a huge monetary gain. If you had bet on every underdog's point spread this season you'd be up roughly 10% of your total balance. Aka, a winning bettor.

But that's not all!

It's not the size of the dog in the fight

The upcoming Monday Night Football matchup between the Washington Snyders and the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles has a point spread where the Eagles are favored by DOUBLE DIGITS. They're expected to spank their division rivals, which usually means an easy day at work, right?

Not this year.

In 2021 - Double-digit underdogs were 13-23-1 ATS - 35.1%

In 2022 - Double-digit underdogs are 8-4 ATS - 66.7%

That's a ludicrous difference. Double-digit dogs, the worst of the worst, the bottom of the barrel, have been covering at a ridiculous rate.

Is this a trend? Is this the new NFL? Will Philly fall into a trap set by former car salesman Taylor Heinicke?
